Choosing one average before the open
Practical guidance from technical analysis training on selecting one moving average before seeking trend confirmation.
Stacking a 9, 21, and 55 on the same pane feels thorough. In practice it postpones the decision our workshops exist to train: which average defines the thesis today?
Horizon first
Match the primary average to holding time. Intraday futures work often needs a shorter period on the execution chart and a slower average on the daily for context. Swing holders on Korean mid-caps usually fare better naming a daily simple average and leaving the rest off until confirmation fails.
Write the period on the margin
Before the open, write the period and type (simple or exponential) in the chart margin. If you change it mid-session, note why. Unexplained mid-session changes are the most common homework defect we see.
Confirmation stays secondary
Confirmation rules attach to the primary average. Secondary averages, if used at all, only veto—they do not invent a new thesis when the primary is undecided. That hierarchy is what we rehearse in Moving Average Foundations before anyone attends the clinic.
